Golden tips to get success in IITJEE/AIEEE

INTRODUCTION ABOUT IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology)
The Indian Institutes of Technology (popularly known as IITs) are institutions of national importance established through an Act of Parliament for fostering excellence in education. There are fifteen IITs at present, located in Bhubaneswar, Bombay (Mumbai), Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras (Chennai), Mandi, Patna, Punjab, Rajasthan and Roorkee. Over the years IITs have created world class educational platforms dynamically sustained through internationally recognized research based on excellent infrastructural facilities. The faculty and alumni of IITs continue making huge impact in all sectors of society, both in India and abroad. Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), Varanasi and Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, are the oldest institutions in India and are known for their immense contributions towards society at large and for science and technology in particular.

The primary objectives behind such institutions are to:
• Build a solid foundation of scientific and technical knowledge and thus to prepare competent and motivated engineers and scientists.
• Create environment for freedom of thought, cultivate vision, encourage growth, develop personality and self- discipline for pursuit of excellence.
• Kindle entrepreneurial streak.

All of the above help to prepare the students admitted to these institutions for successful professional and social lives. Today, alumni of these institutions occupy key positions in industry and academia in India and abroad.
Each institute has well-equipped modern laboratories, state-of-the-art computer network and well stocked technical library. Teaching methods rely on direct personal contact between the teachers and the students and the use of traditional and modern instructional techniques. Students live in a pleasant and intellectually stimulating environment with people having similar goals and aspirations, which is an exciting and unique experience.

Credit-based academic programmes offer flexibility to students to progress at their own pace. A minimum level of performance is necessary for satisfactory progress. The medium of instruction is English. These institutions offer courses leading to Bachelor's degree in a number of engineering, technological and scientific disciplines.
M.Sc. Integrated courses in pure and applied sciences and M.Tech. Integrated courses in a few disciplines are also offered by some of these Institutions. In addition, some IITs offer Dual-Degree M.Tech. programmes.

The admissions to the Undergraduate Programmes at these institutions for all Indian and Foreign nationals are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

INTRODUCTION ABOUT JEE (The Joint Entrance Examination)

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) is one of the most competitive exams in India, with nearly 5 lakhs aspirants appearing for it. However, only about 10,000 students are selected. Here are a few tips to help you make the cut if you're planning on appearing for the JEE.
The format of JEE papers keeps changing. However, for the last four years, the format has included two separate papers of three hours each. Both these papers include three sections on physics, Chemistry and mathematics. The questions in these papers are of the senior-secondary academic level expected at the stage. Each section includes questions under different headings.

The IIT-JEE is one of the most competitive exams in the country. The test follows no fixed format. An analysis of the last three year's question papers shows that there were two separate papers of three hour duration. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 included sections on Chemistry, physics and mathematics. The questions are of the senior-secondary academic level.

The Joint Entrance Exam for IITs is a test of logical ability and presence of mind. The examination tests the knowledge of subject but at the same time it cannot be qualified merely on the basis of knowledge. One must be able to apply the concept to solve problems of JEE for which understanding the problem itself is quite essential. And therefore, sufficient time needs to be devoted to analyzing the questions before solving it.
JEE consists of a wide variety of questions. Comprehension-based problems may sometime look easy but can be difficult. Do not solve these questions before studying the comprehension/passage as the concept mentioned in the comprehension may be hypothetical and different from the concepts normally studied.

Large number of students have theoretical as well as conceptual knowledge which is required to qualify IIT-JEE but they fail to apply that knowledge while writing the exam on the D-day due to lack of confidence or exam pressure. One can even get selected for answering easier and moderate difficulty level questions.
Prepare yourselves mentally for IIT-JEE
"The success is to be achieved", keeping this in mind the aspirants must accept themselves as deserving candidates for JEE success because during preparation confidence plays an important role. Be Self Confident, I would like to cite some quotations on Self Confidence:-

“Believe in your dreams and they will come true”

“Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.”
“One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.”
“There is no short cut to success. One has to work very hard, put in a lot of effort. You should have a problem-solving mentality and a right approach to every problem.”
Concentration:There is a difference of concentration when you normally study or when you appear for a test. While doing a test, you level of concentration is much higher. So these tests will help you in improving your concentration on a regular basis.
Work Very Hard and Dedication: One need to be dedicated for the study, and work very hard to crack the IIT JEE examination. If you study with full concentration and dedication, 7-8 hours of study is more than enough. But if your mind is not sharp enough to catch the solution in one go, you may need to increase the hours. But when you inch close to your exam, be relaxed. Stress can sometimes hamper your results. Quality of study is important. Your target should be clear. Work hard and leave the rest to God.
Start early and be sincere
You should start your preparation from the very beginning of your class 11th. All three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) should be given equal importance. Always be sincere and attend classes regularly to have good knowledge of fundamentals; communicate with your teachers and remove all the doubts.
Course Planning
Planning is the key:-  Course planning and examination strategies are vital for achieving success. Give priority to the topics from which questions are more often asked. Make your own exam strategies to take the test in a more comfortable manner.
You need to be a planner: Keeping in mind your strengths and weaknesses, and the time available, you should have a meticulous plan of study. Set up milestones according to months, weeks, days and hours.
Self-Study is Most Important
Self-Study is the most important part of your preparation. Even if you join coaching classes, it is your efforts which will take you through the exam. The teachers can only guide you. However, there are some things you should keep in mind. Relevance of what you study is very important. If the JEE syllabus does not specify a particular topic, it will not really help you to read the topic. To get a feel of what type of questions are asked, you can refer to some papers from the past few years. It is sure that if you put-in your best efforts without distractions, then you surely reap success. IIT JEE is a real test of all your capabilities and knowledge you have acquired in two years time. So you got to be thorough in your syllabus and capable of solving the questions with the best of efforts. Charge your mind to prepare you for academically and psychologically for the success in IIT JEE. Also keep your studies updated with school and not only stick to coaching or tuitions.   Don’t hesitate while clarifying your doubts with teachers. When you give your best, then the best will come to you.
Clear your basic concepts
An IIT Aspirant has to make sure that the concepts are understood clearly to start with. There are 3 sections in IIT JEE, namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics. The syllabus is mostly from class 11th and 12th syllabus. The basic concepts in each of these subjects in class 11th and 12th should be made clear which will be helpful when it comes to preparing .Make sure that you make notes of your weak and strong points. Now give more importance to the weak points in each subject compared the strong ones.
Selection of Coaching Institutes
I won’t be advertising any coaching institute here. But my advice is “Go for the BEST”. Even if you join coaching try not to deviate yourself from your studies and consistently focus in the classroom and revise the same at home.
IIT- JEE coaching has become far too commercialised. Hundreds of coaching institutes have come into existence, claiming hundreds of ranks and want to show the topper as their student. It is the student who falls prey to all these gimmicks and often ends up with either a low rank or failure at JEE. So before joining any coaching institute you should see that the institute should have a strong reputation. Some tips for choosing the right institute are:

  1. You should choose area–wise reputed and result oriented coaching institute.
  2. Never go for nationwide results and ads in newspapers. Just go to the branch of a particular institute to inquire the result of that branch for last two–three years as your child is going to study in that very branch and by the faculty of that branch.
  3. You should only notice the results of the students who were enrolled for classroom program (weekend or regular classes) for one or two years.
  4. In the result of those students who took Distance Learning Program (DLP) or correspondence program or AIETS is nothing based on true knowledge and students are enrolled even after the IIT-JEE results are out.
  5. To get the true knowledge about results you can ask the pass out students, or, ask the senior students of that institute/branch about the real truth.
  6. Faculty should be compatible with students and should always be ready to help them in their studies.
  7. Management should take care of all the affairs going in the institute and should be able to solve the problems of students, if any.
  8. The study material provided by the institute should be updated from time to time.
  9. Students who live in far away villages/towns where there are no good coaching institutes should prefer to take good tuitions of each subject or he/she can also take correspondence program from a good coaching institute.

Choose a proper guidance
In today's competitive era, proper guidance is needed for success. The pattern of JEE has become concept based. So you need clear and doubtless concepts in each and every topic to achieve a good rank in JEE. In each subject you should choose your guide who can clear up your doubts.
Prepare Good Notes
Prepare good notes during attending lectures or self study. If you want to make the concept more clear while preparing notes of lectures leave some space and just after lecture fill up the space with clarification. Make notes such as in maths and physics you can have a collection of formulas and concepts and in Chemistry you can have reactions as well, so that you can read them regularly.
Do continuous effort
IIT-JEE preparation requires continuous effort. Each subject must be given proper and regular time. Instead of preparing one subject for some days all the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) must be given some time every day. It also helps in breaking monotony.
Do regular revision
Revision on regular basis: Revision is very important after regular intervals.
Regular Test: Test on regular basis is also required to judge one’s ability, understanding and area of difficulty. For revision and doubt there should be proper revision classes and doubt sessions so that students could clarify their doubts and overcome difficulties. Regular revision can help you a lot as you can get your doubts cleared. You can either ask your teacher or you can also seek the help of your fellow brilliant students.
If anyone junior to you asks something relating to their studies you must not hesitate to tell them as it will not only help them but also help you to revise your early syllabus and make you understand the topic better.
Particularly for those students who regularly secure good rank in their schools and coaching institutes test should note their weak points and should learn from each test to prepare for the next one.
Check yourself regularly
Do complete your studies by the end of January (All the three papers syllabus should be completed by the end of January or at most by mid February), and try to give as many tests as you can.  Try to find out your weak areas, and then do research on those weak areas, this will help you a lot.
Need for speed:- During practice sessions, develop speed in working out the problems. The strategy of solving questions, starting from the fundamentals, will spark thinking processes which are essential to enhance and master analytical skills with conceptual understanding. Aim for 100 per cent hit rate. This will give you a competitive edge. Speed and accuracy will also allow you to finish the IIT-JEE papers ahead of time, leaving you with time for revision. You can also opt for IITJEE papers of last ten to twelve years.
Problem Solving:- After you are through with class 11th & 12th theory & concepts, you should start solving entrance type questions in each subject from some good guide or some other relevant books. Study every topic again in which you have gained knowledge already, but this will not be enough for IIT JEE. So, get your fundamentals clear.
Examination Strategies for IIT JEE
Time Management Tips: We can define time management as the different techniques through which an individual can utilize his time and other associated resources. Moreover, time management brings many benefits for the students such as gaining on time, get motivated and learn to take initiatives, manage to minimize evasion of any sort and much more. You cannot get time to review your learning. By time management, you can manage to reduce nervousness.
Revision related tips:-  After 12th Board Exam or about 20 days before the JEE Screening Test, start getting acquainted with a wide variety of topics to improve the range of numerical you can attempt. Do not attempt lengthy questions, and focus instead on objective, numerical questions to practice as many types of questions as you can. Revise all important concepts and formulae, so that they are on your tips and come to you without any effort or thought. The screening paper gives equal weightage to all three subjects and so should your screening preparation. Remember: The screening test has negative marking for wrong answers. So your familiarity with concepts will be crucial if you take the calculated risk of logical guessing.
Things to keep in mind one day before the examination:- You need at least 6-8 hours of sleep before the examination to keep yourself fresh while solving questions. Eat a light meal so that you do not feel drowsy or lethargic during the paper. Revise only those topics that you have studied earlier. Do not start reading any new topic just before the examination, since this will be a waste of time and you may lose the information you have already grasped. You should reach the test centre at least half an hour before the exam and if you haven't seen the centre before, then you must go and visit the centre one day before the exam.
Points regarding presentation:Start attempting the question paper only after reading the instructions given on it very carefully. While attempting questions, go on segregating them by the A, B, and C method.  A: The questions from topics that you have prepared well and you can clearly comprehend the meaning of these questions. You have done questions containing similar concept earlier and you are confident that you will be able to solve these.  B: You know you can solve these questions but they are time-consuming, nevertheless you are confident you will be able to crack them when you come back to them. These questions should be attempted in the second round of question attempting, i.e. when you have solved all questions marked with A. B.  C: You don't know head or tail of these questions and you should not waste time attempting any of them.
Attempting to solve all questions in haste increases the chances of error. It is better to solve slightly fewer questions faultlessly. Never attempt two questions at the same time. Concentrate on one question at a time. Carry out all rough work only in the space given in the paper. If you need a diagram to understand questions in say physics or coordinate geometry etc., do make one.

Best of luck for your exam…………

Note: The above matter is written according to the authors wish and no one is forced to follow this or that. Everyone is free to study according to his views.
